Retired Army General Eric K. Shinseki took the oath of office on January 21, 2009, as the nation’s seventh secretary of Veterans Affairs, assuming the leadership of the Department of Veterans Affairs following Senate confirmation. Based on some of his public statements, it seems his focus will be on streamlining the disability claim process, enhancing and leveraging VA’s information technology capabilities and improving veterans’ access to care. The tasks before him are challenging from a budget perspective, considering the technological issues, and in some cases, a business as usual point of view. His past leadership and vision give good cause for hope that many of the tasks he will lay out will be attainable.

It will certainly be an important task for him to look over the fiscal year 2010 budget submission and see where the money he will have to work with is and where it needs to be.

As part of a complete revamping of our Websites, to include Military Medical Technology and the other seven magazines in the KMI Media Group family, we are also revising our E-nnouncements—our twice monthly digital publications. These digital publications are free and have a distribution that mirrors that of our printed publications, reaching a cross section of military, VA and military medical suppliers. These newsletters are free—matching all eight of our printed magazines. For example, the current issue of the MMT E-nnouncement includes a synopsis of a report on the VA long-term care strategic planning, with a link to the complete report.  To join our email list, click here.  Your information will not be shared, leased, or sold.

As always, please feel free to call or drop me an e-mail if you have any comments or suggestions.
