Mixed Marks for U.S. WMD Response Preparation

A new “report card” from the bipartisan Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism said the U.S. government should do more to protect against the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction (WMD), biological and otherwise.


Work to enhance the nation’s response to biological attacks, for instance, received an “F,” work with Russia to reduce the dangers of WMD received a “C,” and efforts to reform Congressional oversight of intelligence gathering and other aspects of homeland security also received an “F.” On the positive side, efforts to, among other things, develop a strategy for improving bioforensic capabilities received an “A.”
