Q: Tell us a little about Zoll.

A: Zoll is committed to the advancement of resuscitation and critical care. Our dedication to developing new and innovative solutions that help improve patient outcomes has been our ongoing commitment for 30 years. Zoll’s innovations began when founder Paul Zoll, M.D., pioneered the first pacing device in 1952, which led to the first non-invasive pacing devices used by the military. Since then, Zoll’s mission has been to provide superior products and solutions that encompass every facet of critical care and work as a system to save lives and improve outcomes. Our therapies include defibrillation and monitoring, circulation through increased perfusion and CPR feedback, data management and fluid resuscitation. New to Zoll’s portfolio of products is our Intravascular Temperature Management system, which provides the power and control needed to rapidly, safely and more effectively manage the core body temperature of critically ill or surgical patients. We pride ourselves on creating not only innovative but also durable products, like our airworthy AED PRO, which has the highest ingress protection rating (for water and sand protection) on the market. Zoll was one of the first companies to offer airworthy defibrillators/ pacemakers to the military. We help provide a greater level of care on the front lines, throughout the medevac system, within military treatment facilities and to veterans at home.

Q: What is your position in the military market sector?

A: As a leader in the market, our focus is on the improvement of patient outcomes. With a history of partnering with the U.S. military for over 20 years, Zoll is a well-established supplier to U.S. military operations worldwide as well as a supplier to a number of foreign military organizations. Zoll’s dedicated government team, with its combined expertise and passion, collaborates with our customers to understand their evolving requirements in order to offer solutions that meet new practice guidelines and improve patient outcomes. By partnering with Zoll, our customers can be confident that every product provides superior performance independently and as part of a fully integrated system. It is our privilege to play an important role in providing resuscitation and therapeutic temperature management products in support of the military’s medical mission for our troops around the globe who keep our nation secure and free.

Q: How do Zoll’s products help the military health care system meet new guidelines and directives and improve patient outcomes?

A: Military and Veterans Affairs facilities around the world have used Zoll’s solutions and products to help them comply with ever-changing guidelines and directives as well as save lives and improve outcomes. Our AED Pro, with features such as Real CPR Help and See-Thru CPR technology, and our CodeNet data management solutions allow facilities to comply with early defibrillation program directives. Our data management solutions also assist with DoD and VA directives for quality management and electronic patient record initiatives. It takes more than real-time information to improve outcomes. Zoll provides the ability to collect and report quality management data to facilitate improvements in hospital resuscitation.

Another device helping DoD and VA clinicians treat sudden cardiac arrest patients is our AutoPulse automated chest compression system. Finally, to help VA facilities treat one of their highest priority concerns—heart failure—the LifeVest Wearable Defibrillator is part of the continuum of care for patients with heart failure, protecting them from sudden cardiac arrest during medical therapy optimization and allowing them to return to activities of daily living.

Q: What do you consider Zoll’s biggest success in the military?

A: Zoll is pleased to have been selected as the leading supplier of resuscitation products, which are utilized throughout military health care, including special operations medicine, Navy Fleet and Marine expeditionary medicine units, Army forward surgical teams and combat support hospitals, critical care air transport teams, and VA and military hospitals. In 2002, the military selected Zoll’s CCT Airworthy defibrillator as the PMI defibrillator of choice. Then in 2004, Zoll was awarded the first defibrillator exigency contract from the Defense Logistics Agency to support contingency operations and wartime requirements. As the current PMI supplier, Zoll was once again awarded the exigency contract in 2009.

Most importantly, I think Zoll’s technology has helped improve clinical outcomes throughout the military health care system. The lives saved by clinicians using Zoll technologies are both humbling and rewarding. ♦
