Escape Respirator

Melksham, United Kingdom-based Avon Protection said its new NH15 respirator is designed to provide at least 15 minutes of protection for individuals escaping from chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear contaminations. The CBRN Air Purifying Escape Respirator, as the product is called, is designed particularly for police, emergency medical services and fire officers.

Avon said the product, which is certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, is made of clear material to make it easier for individuals to see, as well as make the respirator’s appearance seem “nonthreatening.” Avon said the product takes less than 30 seconds to put on and has a shelf life of five years.

Disinfection System

Paris-based EADS Defense & Security and Pursuit Dynamics together have developed a new disinfection system for coping with epidemics and biological weapon attacks. The Transportable Modular Aerosol-based Decontamination and Disinfection System (TransMADDS), as the product is called, is used to disperse liquids for disinfecting surfaces and devices in closed rooms as fast as possible while using the least possible amount of disinfectant.

Diagnostic Imaging

Greenville, S.C.-based Agfa HealthCare introduced the Impax 6.4 version of its Impax Pacs line of diagnostic imaging software. The company said the software provides better management of large CT and MR datasets for radiologists, clinicians and other users, including a tool that simplifies navigation and viewing of multiple datasets simultaneously. The software also, among other features, lets users link together studies for comparative viewing.

“With our emphasis on managing the navigation of these large volume studies as well as our integrated 3-D imaging, Agfa HealthCare’s Impax 6.4 delivers the tools and workflows to support our customers in maintaining productivity in the services they deliver,” said Georgios Spitadakis, global business manager for imaging informatics.

Agfa HealthCare is a member of the Mortsel, Belgium-based Agfa-Gevaert Group.

Salt Lake City-based Idaho Technology said the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command approved the use of its Platinum Path extraction kit (PPEK) for use with DoD’s joint biological agent identification and diagnostic system, an integrated system for rapid identification and diagnostic confirmation of biological agent exposure or infection.

Developed under the direction of Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense—Chemical Biological Medical Systems (CBMS) Joint Project Management Office, PPEK is designed for collecting dozens of different sample types for analysis within 30 minutes, the company said.

Wireless Telemedicine

Home care agency Bayada Nurses of Moorestown, N.J., said it expanded its use of Toronto-based Ideal Life remote health management products for CHF and hypertension. Products include a Bluetooth-enabled digital weight scale called the Body Manager and a blood pressure monitor called the BP-Manager, both of which can automatically store and send data to health facilities. Bayada said the timely information helps avoid unnecessary hospital stays for patients.

Bayada Nurses employs more than 12,000 nurses, home health aides, therapists and social workers in 18 states, as well as the United Kingdom. Ideal Life makes products approved by the Food and Drug Administration for chronic conditions such as CHF, diabetes, obesity and hypertension.

“More than two-thirds of the population over 65 will eventually need some form of long-term care,” said Ideal Life president and founder Jason Goldberg. “As assisted living costs continue to rise, we are more committed than ever to developing new health care solutions that truly benefit the quality of people’s lives.”

Chem-Bio Suit

Dayton, Ohio-based Lion Apparel unveiled the Extended Response Suit, its latest garment for protection against chemical, biological and radiological threats. The suit is made of Gore Chempak fabric, may be worn up to eight hours at a time, and is certified to the NFPA 1994, Class 3 standard. The ERS also protects users against toxic industrial chemicals and materials as well as chemical warfare agents, Lion said.

“We chose the Gore Chempak Ultra Barrier G9492 Glove System instead of the rubber glove option offered by our competitors to maximize protection. This also allows for a higher level of dexterity and a tactile feel,” said Tom Martin, Lion’s director of business development. “In addition, we incorporated an air-tight zipper, which is an upgrade to the water-rated zipper found in other comparable garments.”

Lion said the ERS seams are fully sealed, so users don’t need to tape them. The ERS has a shelf life of 10 years.
