Kalman & Company
Walter Kalman is the president of Kalman & Company, Inc. and has over 20 years experience in government acquisition, contracting and procurement, and business process improvement. He is recognized as an expert in business and analytical processes and has earned a reputation as a strategic thinker and business process innovator. He designed and implemented the first strategic business advisory cell for the Program Manager CBRN at the Marine Corps Systems Command. An unprecedented success, this concept has been adopted by virtually all of Kalman & Company’s clients. These strategic advisory cells provide our clients with a critical review of processes and a plan for the integration of commercial best practices in the acquisition process.
Kalman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Fairleigh Dickerson University, a Masters of administration and education from American University, and a JD in contracts law from George Mason University.
Q: For starters, tell me a little about the company?
A: Kalman & Company, Inc., a woman owned small business, was founded by Barbara and Walter Kalman in 1987. For over 20 years, we have provided program management, acquisition, and business and analytical services to both the government and commercial sector.
We pride ourselves on our ability to provide quality support. This quality is a reflection of Kalman’s commitment to hire and maintain a talented, professional workforce. We partner with both large and small companies to provide expertise not inherent to Kalman.
Q: Who, within the Department of Defense and federal government do you do business with?
A: Our partnering agreements, coupled with our corporate values, reduce bureaucracy; increase flexibility; and provide high quality and best value support to our customers. Kalman & Company clients include the Joint Program Executive Office-Chemical and Biological Defense [JPEO-CBD], the Joint Project Manager for Individual Protection [JPM-IP], the Joint Project Manager for Decontamination [JPM-DECON], the Joint Equipment Assessment Program [JEAP], the United States Marine Corps through Marine Corps System Command [MARCORSYSCOM], the United States Air Force, Department of Education, the National Institute for Literacy [NIFL], the Department of Agriculture, and NASA.
Q; When did you first do business with the military?
A: Kalman & Company’s support to the Chemical and Biological Defense Program began in 1999 when we were awarded a contract to provide business and analytical support to the Marine Corps Systems Command’s program manager for NBC defense.
Today this support has grown significantly with Kalman & Company providing prime contractor support to the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense and the joint project offices for individual protection and decontamination.
Additionally, Kalman & Company provides subject matter expertise and analytical support to the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Joint Equipment Assessment Program and CBRN program management support to the U.S. Special Operations Command.
Q: Is there anything that sets Kalman & Company apart from others in the field?
A: The Kalman Model is somewhat unique in that we bring to our clients superb teams made up of Fortune 500 companies ably led and managed by one small company. Our clients agree that the simplified management process combined with the depth offered by larger companies provides service that always exceeds expectations. There is no corporate bureaucracy to impede workflow, and most Kalman program managers also function as site managers and project officers.
Q: What do you consideration some of your most recent achievements?
A: Kalman and Kalman teams’ recent achievements include providing outstanding support to joint and Marine Corps acquisition commands in the areas of performance based acquisition, technology transitions, simplified materiel fielding and strategic resource and asset consolidation and management.
These achievements and other recent initiatives have allowed us to align our future with the future of the DoD acquisition community and the DoD Chemical and Biological Defense Program. ♦
